Common problems that migrant works experience when they are being exploited.
Here are some of the common complaints that we get from migrants about employers’ behaviour:
- requiring payment in exchange for a job
- not paying for all the hours worked
- not paying for annual leave or declining annual leave requests
- not paying for public holidays
- producing fake payslips or timesheets that show incorrect hours worked
- asking for wages to be paid back (in cash or as an electronic bank transfer)
- not allowing rest and meal breaks
- changing job duties without discussion
- bullying and unfair behaviour
- threatening to cancel visas or deportation.
All of these are illegal and if any of these things are happening to you, we recommend that you:
- breathe deeply, and try to stay as calm as possible
- read the information on this website. It is (available in different languages)
- read the ‘Collecting evidence’ guide and start gathering any evidence you can
- download the VERI-Mi app and upload your evidence, and if you’re still in your job, turn on the location tracking features
- contact us and we will do all we can to help you.
